OVERVIEW

Ania Catherine and Dejha Ti’s seminal immersive experiential artwork, ‘On View,’ commissioned by the SCAD Museum of Art, examines how art experiences generate in today’s audiences the wish for themselves to be its subject, and how addictive interfaces, surveillance capitalism, and data privacy in modern society informs this phenomenon. ‘On View’ is both socio-political critique and an experiment in art and technology: it illuminates the forces shaping our everyday realities and offers audience-participants a way into a critical conversation on the digital architectures we all inhabit, and it shows the imperative for tech literacy, especially as technology becomes increasingly invisible. Immersion via nuanced human-computer interaction creates a world that elicits feelings and knowledge, imprinted in physical memory.

‘On View' allows audience-participants to interact with a virtual world with no virtual layer—a novel form of mixed reality—as they move through the installation’s three spaces:

Terms and Condition > Stages Gallery >The Golden Gallery

The installation appears to be non-digital—but it’s the opposite. It relies on a ubiquitous network of technology, using TouchDesigner as a mainbrain integrating real-time facial recognition (AI subsets: computer vision & machine learning); voice commands; microprocessor devices/objects; environment-embedded sensors; kinetics; and guest profile generation. The technology is embedded both conceptually and technically into the backdrop of the experience—a critical nod to the misuse of pervasive computing and IoT. Knowingly hyperbolic, the piece demonstrates how small and frequent choices in our daily lives make us extremely vulnerable–like unknowingly training facial recognition systems, or clicking “I agree” to a T&C we never read.

a provocative integration of Ti and Catherine’s fleshy experiential practice, experiments in art and technology, and poetic approach to HCI (human-computer interaction).

Presented at Christie’s Art & Tech Summit (Mixed Reality Hong Kong)

Christie's, in collaboration with Christie's Education, presents Art+Tech: Mixed Reality in Hong Kong on November 21 2019. As part of the "Creating Realities : Immersive Installations" segment, Dejha Ti and Ania Catherine of Operator discuss their approach to immersion and provide a practical overview of their experiential work "On View".

Audience-participants move through three distinct spaces:

Terms and Condition > Stages Gallery >The Golden Gallery

{01 TERMS AND CONDITION

{ 01 Terms and Condition

The first phase of the exhibition is Terms and Condition—an immersive contract that is signed by both the artists {Ania Catherine & Dejha Ti} and the audience-participant {you}. Sign it or you cannot enter into the next phase. Stand in the ring, a sensor triggers a light animation that circles your feet. {Signed}.

Reminder of all the times we click I agree” to T&Cs we never read.

{02 STAGES GALLERY

Like social media, the installation does absolutely nothing without human input

{ 02 Stages Gallery

Enter the Stages Gallery. Your pupils dilate. Sure. I won’t show you art, I’ll take your photo instead. A little to the left...perfect. Location of touch is important {invisible sensors}. A blinking eye. Voice commands {man through a woman’s voice}. 4, 3, 2, 1. Light spills out. Look at the eyes.

“A complex network of technology is embedded into the background—a nod to ubiquitous computing”

Using TouchDesigner as a main brain, ‘On View’ integrates over 20 network devices, real-time facial recognition, kinetic winch control, environmental sensors, dmx light control, media playback and guest profile generation.

YOU ARE ON VIEW

{ 03 The Golden Gallery

You are on view in The Golden Gallery. Standard fine art environment. Etiquette. Shhh, there’s a security guard {waiting for his shift to end, apathetic to “the Art”}. Gold frame means important, probably old. Feet in the circle. Bulletproof glass {protecting you from yourself }.

A small camera sits atop. We recognize your face {facial recognition}. We’ll keep it safe.

No QR code? #? We said fine art.
